NCDOTThe North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is efficiently working to offer a convenient, effective and safe multimodal transportation network and also to provide easy connectivity of people and goods to many destinations and markets across North Carolina and worldwide. Road Transportation in North Carolina


The road transportation in North Carolina comprises of several interstate highways, state routes, bridges and tunnels. NCDOT is determined to ensure safe, convenient and excellent transportation and also to provide easy connectivity to various cities and states.

Roadways


The major interstate highways in North Carolina are-

  • I-26: It links between Charleston in South Carolina and Kinsport. In North Carolina, I-26 generally has 4 lanes which pass through the Appalachian Mountains and also crosses through Asheville and the Eastern Continental Divide.

  • I-40: In North Carolina, it links from the western Tennessee state line to Wilmington in the east. I-40 passes through cities, such as Winston-Salem, Asheville, Durham, Raleigh, Greensboro, and ends in Wilmington.

  • I-73: The highway connects from southern Ellerbe to Greensboro, through Asheboro. It is still under construction and its completed route extends in the southern region towards Myrtle Beach in South Carolina and towards northern region to Martinsville in Virginia.

  • I-74: The highway is half completed and its routes link the state in a south-easterly pattern from Virginia to South Carolina. I-74 passes through the cities of Winston-Salem, Asheboro, High Point, Lumberton and Rockingham.

  • I-77: The highway connects the cities of Charlotte and the Western Piedmont. It links from the south end at the South Carolina state line, near Fort Mill to the north end at the Virginia line near Mount Airy.

  • I-85: The highway is the state's second longest interstate and connects from the South Carolina border to the Virginia border. It serves the cities of Greenville, Atlanta, Charlotte, Richmond, Greensboro, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

  • I-95: The highway connects major portion of the eastern regions of the state, linking from the southeastern Rowland region to Roanoke Rapids in the northeastern part of the Inner Banks.

Adopt-a-Highway


adoptThe Adopt-A-Highway-Program provides a great opportunity for individuals, organizations, schools or businesses to help maintain cleanliness of all roads within the State Highway System and also plant trees or wildflowers, and helps remove graffiti, to make roads more appealing. All volunteers must be at least 12 years old and those above 18 years must be under proper adult supervision. The program is a successful government-public partnership program and various schools, social groups, business entities and religious groups actively adopt and participate in the program. The program helps to keeps the state clean by effectively reminding people not to litter, and also assist in saving taxpayers’ money.

NCDOT Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation


NCDOT's Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation (DBPT) is a program that was initiated in 1973. The program works towards including bicycle and pedestrian mobility, safety and accessibility into the whole transportation program through planning, engineering, training and education. It is focused to elevate bicycling in the state as it is an energy-efficient, healthy and non-polluting transportation alternative.

North Carolina Scenic Byways


A route is designated a scenic byway or highway as the route's roadsides and view sheds offer scenic views, archaeological, natural, historical, cultural, or recreational values while passing through it. The NCDOT has designated 54 scenic byways that offer the visitors and all passers by to witness along the waybyways, some of the state's history, geography and culture.

North Carolina 511 Information Line


The 511 Information Line in North Carolina is a part of the nation's effort to provide up to date travel information to the public by dialing 511 from the phone. The travel information is made available to the people through venues such as, Dynamic Message Signs, Highway Advisory Radio, and on other NCDOT services. The state adopted 511 in 2004. Through the automated voice response system, the 511 callers are provided with proper travel information and guidance. Callers may inquire about specific areas, and also the system gives updates traffic incidents, closures and other vital roadway conditions.
